ANNUAL REPORT
2017
INTRODUCTION
The activists of Green Network are working in different directions but all together we are a single entity. We are united by a common vision of the green future of Belarus, and this report is about what we do together for the sake of our strategic goals. We invite you to join us in the activities of our partnership. Green network is open to any suggestions and cooperation. We are ready to support new ideas and projects and always welcome your feedback.
WHO ARE WE?
"Green network" is a partnership of environmental organizations, activists, initiatives, experts that united in one network to solve the environmental problems that cannot be solved single-handedly.

In the history of public environmental movement in Belarus we have been acting as a partnership since November 6, 2007. The partnership consists of 12 environmental associations and 28 individual participants from Minsk, Grodno, Gomel, Baranovichi, Brest and other cities of Belarus.

Problems we work on are the problems that cannot be solved by one organization or a single person. Only united we can expect that our voice will be heard and opinion will be taken into account. This is the main reason, why we tend to consolidate the Belarusian green movement.

The mission of Green network
Is to achieve harmony between man and nature through sustainable development and a strong green movement
Our strategic areas of work:
1. Protection of nature and promotion of its rehabilitation.
2. Promotion of public participation in environmentally important decision-making.
3. The development of the public green movement in Belarus and the EECCA region (Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia).

The activities of the partnership are based on the Earth Charter, on the principles of sustainability, fairness, transparency, democratic participation, respect for human rights and gender equality.

We actively cooperate with state administration bodies, academic communities who share our concern about the environment of Belarus, as well as with a number of other civil society organizations and business companies.

"URBAN FORESTER"
"Urban Forester" is a campaign of the Green network partnership for the conservation of green zones in the cities with the help of citizens themselves. In 2017, the campaign went outside of Minsk: Lena Shtyk Bozhko became the forester of Brest.
Any area where the trees grow brings not only social but also economic benefits to the city, for example, by neutralizing harmful substances. This is a powerful argument that people have started to use in favour of protection of green areas of the city.

Igor Korzun, Minsk urban forester
My friend from Minsk, coming to our city, always says that Brest as much green, as Minsk was in her childhood. Until it's too late, it is important for Brest citizens to realize, how disastrous an improper pruning and unnecessary trees cutting can be, as it increasingly deprives our city of greenery and uniqueness.

Lena Shtyk Bozhko, Brest urban forester
STOP E40!
Е40 — is a water path with the length of over 2000 km, passing through the territories of Poland, Belarus and Ukraine. On the Belarusian land E40 runs along Dnieper-Bug canal, river Mukhovets, Pina and Pripyat to the very border with Ukraine.

Therefore, public organizations of Belarus — "APB-BirdLife Belarus", "Bahna", "Ecohome", Green network partnership, Center for environmental solutions, the Foundation "For clean Pripyat", the "Earth Time" public association — have joined forces and launched an awareness campaign against the construction of E40 to show the negative effects of the idea.
Stop E40! / Стоп Е40
According to the project E40, the waterpath is a new trade route between the ports of the Baltic and Black seas and will transport up to 4 million tons of cargo per year. The planned navigable path stretches along the territory of the so-called "lungs of Europe" — Pripyat Polesje region.
"GREEN PORTAL"
The portal was created by Green network to talk about the activities of the associates and to promote green ideals; to make environmental lifestyle more popular among different audiences in Belarus and to cover events related to the protection of people's rights to a healthy environment.

"CITIES AND CLIMATE CHANGE"
In November a new online course "Cities and climate change" was launched on the remote platform of the Flying University. The course was created in partnership with the public Association "Ecoproject" and the Green network partnership.

Its goal is to tell about how a city and climate interact with each other, and to present the range of problems associated with the topic.

You can find a course at: http://dp.fly-uni.org/courses/goroda-i-izmenenie-klimata/
LEGAL SERVICE
  • 300 consultations were provided
  • 132 complaints were received
  • Two court processes were attended

In 2017, Public Association "Ecohome" together with the "Green network" partnership consulted citizens on environmental issues, participated in discussions on architectural projects and reports on assessment of environmental impact, changes in environmental legislation.
"GREEN WATCH"
Each person has the right to live in a healthy environment. "Green watch" is a public environmental Inspectorate, which exercises this right. Any person can become an inspector, if they want to solve everyday environmental problems. Nowadays there are more than 370 green inspectors in Belarus.
The inspectors take part in public discussions, involve local citizens in solving environmental issues and advise them. Due to this, people in local communities, where these inspectors groups work, are more aware of their environmental rights, and ecology appears on the agenda: more people began to engage in the prevention and solution of "green" issues.
Regional groups of "Green watch" operate in Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel, Grodno and Minsk regions.

VOLUNTEER SERVICE
  • More than 2,000 worked hours.
  • More than 450 volunteers from all over the country.

The volunteers of Green Network form a community of concerned people who share the desire to be ecofriendly and help the environment by large and small deeds. The volunteer network helps partner organizations locate assistants for different projects.
WITHIN THE YEAR 2017 THE VOLUNTEERS OF GREEN NETWORK:
  • were engaged in translation of texts (the results of the Aarhus Convention were translated into Russian for "Ecohome";
  • participated in environmental actions, in organizing the International Film Festival and installing solar panels on the roof of "Garage 38" together with the Minsk Bicycle society, helped Eka-majsterni to hold the eco-quest in Green hypermarket, a rock festival;
  • with the Centre of environmental solutions has organized an outdoor screening, with the "APB-BirdLife Belarus" and "Minsk Cycling community"- the "Green volunteers day";
  • studied at the "School of young environmental leaders" and studied political ecology in Lviv.
ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGNS
Through the campaigns we try to talk about complex environmental topics and involve people in the "green" agenda, inspiring for eco-friendly lifestyle.

We carried out more than 10 regional and national campaigns this year. During "Vulica Brazil" we revived green spaces and established means for separate garbage collection on the street Oktyabrskaya. We also participated in a Car-free Day; organized Vegan Day, inventing and preparing nine unique vegan dishes, and helped to organize a Climate Day in Pinsk. We provided lectures at the National Arts Museum about urban beautification, as well as in Imaguru business club- within the "Small city months".
As I am a sociologist and the Secretary of the International Council of museums in Belarus and, for that moment, a research assistant of National Arts Museum, for me personally it was important to talk about relevant and significant issues and to find a common thread between the Museum community and eco-activists. It was also important to establish this channel of communication for the ideas of sustainable development to be spread for a large audience and, in the long run, trigger positive social transformation. Such communicative actions indicate that the Museum is aware of its social and educational mission. I really hope that in 2018 the priorities will not change and current management team of cultural projects will continue to work with socially significant topics.

Alina Strelkovskaya, co-curator of "September night - 2017"
THE SCHOOL OF YOUNG ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS
Every year Green network organizes the School of young environmental leaders for people interested in "green" issues.

In Brest the School of Young Environmental leaders is held by Brest environmental NGO "Earth time." The priority of the organization is to improve leadership and managerial abilities of volunteers. Brest School of Young Environmental leaders conducts trainings not only in the classic format. The organizers have created a club for communication of people who are close to environmental activism. As a result, a lot of campaigns of "Zrobim" were initiated by volunteers.
ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY

Over 80% of people expressed their interest in environmental issues, about the same percentage of people consider themselves environmentally friendly. But, unfortunately, people are not willing to solve environmental problems and still want to forward these responsibilities to someone else, including environmental NGOs. But, nevertheless, this interest is present and an important task is to increase this interest and the importance of the environmental agenda.

Inna Panchkovskaya, the coordinator of Green network
ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY
The second time the Green network partnership along with the SATIO centre conducted a study and found out, what environmental issues Belarusians consider important, how they treat environmental activists and how they are going to solve environmental problems.

The results of the study can be found via this link: http://greenbelarus.info/articles/19-12-2017/zelyonaya-set-predstavila-rezultaty-issledovaniya-interesa-belarusov-v.

V FORUM OF ENVIRONMENTAL NGOS OF BELARUS
Every two years the forum brings together environmental organizations and activists from across the country and becomes a platform for strengthening the green movement, experience exchange and discussion of common challenges. In 2017, the forum gathered more than 100 participants and 20 organizations.

The forum was organized by the Green Network partnership, and the following public organizations: "Ecohome", "Bahna", "APB-BirdLife Belarus", "Ecopartnership", nonovernmental agency "Center for environmental solutions," the Foundation "Interaction".

We want to present your album not only in Minsk, but also to travel the country with a trailer, that will accumulate energy required for concerts with the help of solar cells. We will play in parks at least in regional centers. "Green" energy is only part of what we want to say. With this art project we will ancor the following point: environmentally conscious person will only be a cultured one. Things are interrelated.

GLOBAL WIND DAY
For more than a year a wind power station is working in Novogrudok district. On the Global Wind day the Green network partnership together with the UNDP-GEF project "Removing barriers to wind power development in Belarus" organized a press-tour for journalists and employees of Minskenergo to the largest wind farm in the country near Novogrudok.

At the end of the presentation Port Mone trio performed a concert specifically connected with wind energy. The band is recording a new album, using the power of wind turbines, and for this they take their studio and equipment straight out to the windmills.
